Growing Concerns Over Iran's Arms Shipments to Sudan's Army: A Threat to Regional Security.

In a recent development, the United States has expressed deep concern over reported arms shipments from Iran to Sudan's army, currently engaged in a deadly conflict with paramilitaries allegedly backed by the United Arab Emirates and Russia. John Godfrey, the US ambassador to Sudan, highlighted the worrisome external support to both the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He emphasized the potential negative impact of such support on prolonging the conflict and reducing the chances of a negotiated resolution.

Godfrey refrained from naming specific countries but urged external actors to abstain from providing material support to the conflicting parties. He emphasized the detrimental effects of such support on the duration of the conflict and the prospects for a peaceful resolution. Reports suggest a renewed tie between Sudan and Iran, raising concerns about Iranian materiel support to the SAF, adding complexity to an already volatile situation.

The RSF, a paramilitary group aligned with the Sudanese army, claimed to have acquired debris from an Iranian-made Mohajer drone, pointing to possible military cooperation between Sudan and Iran. Western officials, as reported by Bloomberg News, have also suggested that Iran is supplying weapons to Sudan's army, further escalating tensions in the region.

Under former dictator Omar al-Bashir, Sudan developed close ties with Iran, which raises alarms given the strategic location of Sudan along the Red Sea. A significant Iranian presence in the region could have implications for international shipping, especially as Yemen's Huthi insurgents, supported by Iran, have targeted vessels in solidarity with the Palestinians.

This arms support not only threatens the stability of the region but also poses a growing concern for Israel's security. The potential influence gained by Iran through its rapprochement with the Sudanese army could extend its reach in the Red Sea and the broader region, challenging the security interests of the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. The agenda and motives of Iran in the region, particularly in contravention of international navigation security, should be closely monitored to prevent further escalation and promote stability in the area.
