Across cities like Bielefeld and Paderborn, Islamic associations began collecting “Islamic clothing” and “prayer mats” for refugees. It may have seemed harmless, even thoughtful, but this pattern of re-ethnicization subtly reinforced separation from the secular freedoms Germany offered.
