G42: The UAE’s Bold Bid to Shape Global AI

The world is waking up to a new power in artificial intelligence and it’s not where most people expect. Abu Dhabi-based G42 has officially landed on TIME’s 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies, and it’s easy to see why. The company is behind what’s soon to become the largest AI infrastructure project outside the U.S.: a 10-square-mile AI campus that will include supercomputers and a science park. Built with the support of UAE leadership and in collaboration with U.S. companies like OpenAI, the project is central to the country’s ambitious 2031 AI superpower goal.

But G42 isn’t thinking local. The company’s footprint is global spanning from Europe’s first giga-scale AI supercomputer project to new AI initiatives in Kenya and the United States. This isn’t about trying to copy Silicon Valley. It’s about creating an alternative hub of AI advancement, one that’s backed by serious capital and even more serious ambition. G42’s messaging is clear: this is about partnership, not competition.

What really shifted the momentum, however, was Washington’s decision earlier this year to ease chip export restrictions. For the first time, U.S. companies are now able to supply the UAE with advanced semiconductors at scale giving G42 and the region access to the tech needed to power next-gen AI models. For American firms, the partnership brings more than money. It’s about geographic proximity to emerging markets and access to half the world’s population within a few hours’ flight.

Of course, the UAE’s involvement in global AI raises eyebrows particularly when it comes to privacy and political freedoms. G42’s Faheem Ahamed sees it differently, arguing the UAE reflects democratic values in its societal structure. Whatever your view, one thing is certain: the balance of power in AI is shifting and G42 is at the center of it.
